Refine your Google Search - hidden facts

Daily when I come to office, I ramble through Google News. From the instant, we start surfing on internet, we use Google Search engine. Be it just for verifying if GPRS is working fine(Mobile WAP users specifically) or be it you are not sure about the web address or be it you are unsure about what to search, Google has all of the answers. Simply write "answer to life, the universe and everything " and check the results. Google will answer you number "42" which means a lot to Astronomical personnels. Well If you want to refine your search, you can use some keyterms in Google searchbar. I am sharing some of the hidden terms which will help you in filtering the Google results.

1. Boolean Logics : Google main search engine inserts ‘AND’ in two terms before searching in world wide web. For Eg. You write Egg Cup. It means Egg AND Cup. For better results, you may write “Egg OR Cup” or “Egg | Cup”.

2. Synonyms : You want to search any similar word for a word you already know. Just prefix the word with hyphen(-). For Eg. –Love.

3. Stop Words : The very common words are excluded by Google like I, you, if etc. If you want to include then Use “+” operator. For Eg. “If+I+am+alien”.

4. Search Phrases : If you want to search any specific word or Phrase, write it in quotes. Eg. : “putting hands to mouth”

5. Fill in the Blanks : If you Google to do your homework then you can ask for fill in the blanks. Just put an asterisk(*) in place of blank. Eg. : “Radio was discovered in *”.

6. Filetype : A number of times we seek for any data in doc or pdf format for ease. Google recognizes the word “filetype:[file extension]” and search the specific file format format for you. Eg. Filetype:pdf Unix

7. Intitle : To refine your search with results containing the Title with words you want, Use “Intitle: queen”

8. Inurl : If you want to search the web address containing the required word. Use “inurl :air”

9. Search within site : Use “site:[website name] ‘to be searched word’ “. Eg. : site:rkant91.wordpress.com HTC

10. Define : Use built-in dictionary of Google. Use define:[word] to check the meaning of word.

11. Google Calculator : Simply write “12*45 and get the result through Google in-built Calculator.

12. Google Converter : Simply write “34kilos to pounds” and get the results through Google Converter.

Myth Busters

1. Right click & Refresh makes PC faster

Around 15 years ago, computers were always running out of memory. RAM was very expensive and most of the computers had just 4MB to 8MB RAM. Then, there were poorly-coded applications that caused memory leaks. This led to the practice of Right click+ Refresh on the desktop as by refreshing the display or in other words Explorer, in some cases users quickly reclaimed free RAM after closing a process.

On modern computers, which have ample amount of RAM, doing Right click + Refresh is nothing more than a foolish habit.

2. For graphics work, Mac is best

This one too was true sometime back. But now it’s more of a myth than a fact. Before 2006, Apple was using processors based on PowerPC architecture by IBM. Compared to Intel or AMD processors, PowerPC chips had an advantage in graphics-heavy work. But after 2006, Apple shifted to Intel processors. A Mac still has some advantage in font management as well as quality of bundled monitor. But if you are a graphic designer who knows your trade well and who takes care while choosing his gear, you don’t need to buy a Mac just because someone told you that it is better for graphics work.

3. To delete a file permanently, delete it from Recycle Bin

Recently I came across a software which can recover those deleted files which were even deleted from my Recycle bin a long time back. Then I did some R & D and cleared the concept.

Actually when we delete a file from recycle bin, only it starting node(point of memory from where data is written) gets deleted and we can not recover data without its starting node. So the software available in market recovers the Start Node and after which that file which was deleted a long time back can be retrieved.

The file does not get deleted unless it is overwritten, which happens over a period of time when you create new files.

4. CPUs with more cores/Ghz are better

It is just a marketing lie beside the fact that the underlying architecture is what matters. This is the reason why even slower AMD Athlon processors were considerably faster than Pentium 4. Due to this, AMD processors have less misses( term in Computer Hardware Architecture) in memory.

5. You need to stop a USB drive before taking it out

If there is a file transfer going on, which means if you are moving files between pen drive and computer, you may need to stop USB drive before unplugging the pen drive.
But if there is no file transfer happening, you can plug out the pen drive right away.

6. Macs don't have viruses

People using Apple’s MacBook, iMac or Mac Pro are less likely to face computer viruses. But this is not because Apple’s computers or operating software are virus-proof. The fact is that cyber criminals largely focus on Windows because that is used by majority of people. But as popularity of Apple’s computers increases, cyber criminals are taking note and new viruses and trojans on Mac have started appearing.

7. More mega pixels mean better pictures

Generally more mega pixels were a big deal when digital cameras were new. But once the threshold of five mega pixels was reached, the number stopped being the most important factor in a camera.

In any modern camera, image quality primarily depends on sensor size and quality of lens. This is the reason why you are likely to get better images from say a Nikon D40, a 6 mega pixel camera, than a new point-and-shoot slick camera that can capture photos in 14 mega pixels. So don’t judge a cam by its mega-pixel.

What so special in Torrents ? Downloading hub - μTorrent

Torrent files are an element of a P2P (peer to peer) trading system incorporated by easy hassle-free and effective transferring of files from one person to another on the web. Torrent files are the type of files which are downloaded from index web sites. Torrent files are extremely small files and are typically less than 25bits. To download the files, an individual has to download torrent files.

The softwares lke μtorrent are also called Client. These are applications which may be downloaded and installed on the system that the user desires to use for downloading and sharing files. Essentially the client is the actual P2P sharing program. Azureus and UTorrent are two P2P clients.

Some Common terms

Tracker There exists a central server that administers the sharing of files between its various customers is called a tracker. The trackers of many clients are built in devices.

Seeder A computer that has an entire copy of a file being requested by another computer is known as seeder. Users who wish to for instance, download an mp3, must first ensure that the tracker can find a full copy (seed) of the file that they mean to download. <strong><span style=

Leeches This is an individual who is not sharing any files of his or her own and yet is downloading a file or files from other systems. This is considered as breaching the etiquette of cyber world.

Swarm This is an occurrence that involves several computers simultaneously downloading and sharing the very same particular file. In general, clients permit a personal computer to download a file and then upload the portions that already have been downloaded to others.

Using μtorrent

The keys you have to bother about are just the four keys in upper bar where X represents Stop, next one is to start or resume download. Other keys in queue are to pause and stop downloads.

The Left bar and bottom bar can be used to monitor download status in detail seed-wise.
